Катрин Бигълоу стана първата жена в историята на киното, спечелила Оскар за най-добър режисьор за „Войната е опият“. Направена със скромния бюджет от 15 милиона долара, военната драма взе шест от най-престижните награди, включително за най-добър филм, най-добра режисура и оригинален сценарий.
Сандра Бълок спечели Оскар за най-добра актриса за ролята на Лий Ан Туохи в "Сляпата страна". Според критиците това е най-силната роля в кариерата й. Само ден преди това тя бе отличена и с антинаградата Златна малинка за "Всичко за Стив". Така Бълок стана първата звезда, която печели наградите за най-лоша и за най-добра актриса за два дни.
Джеф Бриджис взе Оскар за най-добър актьор за превъплъщението си в залязващия кънтри певец Бед Блейк в "Лудо сърце". Комедиантката МоНик си тръгна с отличието за най-добра поддържаща актриса за филма „Прешъс“. Наградата за поддържаща мъжка роля отиде при Кристоф Валц за "Гадни копилета".
Най-касовият филм на всички времена „Аватар“, който беше номиниран в 9 категории остана само с три Оскара - за сценография, операторско майсторско и визуални ефекти.
"В небето" е най-добрата анимация, според Американската киноакадемия. Филмът получи и Оскар за музика.
